Will’s first assignment for the lab was to create a comprehensive photographic library celebrating the Lab’s pre-eminent human resources, passionately engaged in exploring the solar system. The work served as the basis for the multi-media production: “Welcome to Outer Space”, a 25-minute, multi-screen extravaganza, a fully automated program with ten still slide projectors and motion. It was designed as a permanent installation in at the Von Karman Auditorium at JPL, and the centerpiece of the public tour.

WJW spent over a month surveying their extensive facilities, shooting everybody and everything in sight, available light, mostly hand-held, ‘fly-on-the-wall’ style; a kid in a candy factory. The assignment would lead to a retainer agreement and last a decade.
